Winner of the 2010 Nobel Prize for Economics

Christopher Pissarides is a Professor of Economics and holder of the Norman Sosnow Chair at the London School of Economics.

His areas of specialisation are the economics of labour markets, the employment implications of growth and structural change, and monetary and fiscal policy.

He is winner of the 2010 Nobel prize in economics (jointly with Peter Diamond of MIT and Dale Mortensen of Northwestern University) and of the 2005 IZA prize in labour economics (jointly with Dale Mortensen; Christopher was the first European economist to win this prize).

His publications on unemployment, including his book Equilibrium Unemployment Theory, are standard references in the field and have influenced policy in Europe and elsewhere.

In 2000-07 he was external member of the Cyprus Monetary Policy Committee, which successfully saw the introduction of the euro to that country, and in 2002-03 he was a member of the influential European Commission Employment Taskforce.
